Banished often as an official, he was even exiled as far away as Qiongzhou (modern Hainan). His calligraphy combined the virtues of the Two Wangs, Yan Zhenqing, Li Yong, and Yang Ningshi, exhibiting a dashing, untrammeled air. This leaf with 2 works features mature, strong brushwork, the characters slightly flattened with a horizontal force. The poses are full of feeling, not with plump brushstrokes that lose the harmony. The right work, written on ornamental paper, is rich and smooth. The left one, done in Changzhou perhaps in 1085 on a second trip there, is from his late middle years. This is from “Album of Su Family Calligraphy.”(20100711)
